Purpose:
Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is a rare tumor with extraordinarily different feature between Eastern and Western countries. Transaldolase 1 (TALDO1) is a rate-limiting enzyme involved in the pentose phosphate pathway. The importance of human TALDO1 was involved in different autoimmune diseases and other malignancies. However, the function of TALDO1 in UTUC has not been investigated. This study evaluates the clinical significance of TALDO1 expression in UTUC.
Materials and Methods:
TALDO1 expression was examined in 115 paraffin-embedded tumor samples from patients with UTUC by immunohistochemistry staining. An analysis was performed to identify the association between TALDO1 expression and different clinicopathologic variables.
Results:
In overall survival analysis of TCGA Database, high TALDOI expression had shorter survival in Bladder cancer patient (P=0.0048). In UTUC, TALDO1 high expression is significantly associated with stage (P <0.011), distant metastasis (P <0.023), cancer recurrence (P <0.003) and cancer death (P <0.003). In univariable and multivariable analysis, we found that late stage (III/IV) and high TALDO1 expression are both independent factors for the disease-free survival and cancer-specific survival.
Conclusion:
In our study, increased TALDO1 expression in UTUC is significant correlated with advanced stage (III/IV), cancer recurrence, distant metastasis and cancer death. The high TALDO1 expression also can be as a predictor for poor survival of UTUC patients. Further study is necessary to investigate the role of TALDO1 in carcinogenesis of UTUC.
