Abstract Background

Bladder paraganglioma is a rare malignancy, accounting for less than 0.1% of all bladder tumors. Like other histological type of bladder tumor, hematuria may be one of the common symptoms. The tumor is originated from chromaffin cells, which causing release of catecholamine. Consequently, other symptoms including hypertension and palpitation may owe to the secretion of such hormone. We present a 62-year-old male with a symptomatic bladder paraganglioma.

Case Presentation

A 62-year-old male with underlying disease of prostate cancer, hypertension and dysuria. He complained lower abdominal pain, palpitation and chest tightness after voiding for about 2 years with increased urinary frequency. Abdominal computed

tomography showed one bladder tumor located near bladder dome with diameter around 1.4cm. He received transurethral resection of bladder tumor and pathology report showed paraganglioma. We then arranged laparoscopic partial cystectomy and there was no residual malignant neoplasm from specimen this time. The patient is now under regular follow-up.

Conclusion

Paraganglioma is a rare disease and may cause symptoms aside from gross hematuria. Surgical intervention may be a suitable treatment choice if the tumor is resectable.
