1Division of Urology, Department of Surgery, Chi Mei Medical Center, Tainan, Taiwan;
Objective:
Children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often experience a higher incidence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). This case series study aims to explore five cases identified at our institution to better understand this association.
Materials and Methods:
A retrospective analysis was conducted on cases seen at the pediatric urology clinic between 2021 and 2023 under Dr. Su’s care. All patients had an ADHD diagnosis confirmed by a psychiatrist. The observed LUTS included urgency, intermittency, urinary incontinence, and enuresis. A total of five cases were reviewed.
Results:
The five patients, aged between 6 and 10 years, exhibited various LUTS. Four of the children presented with enuresis, while two showed urgency-frequency symptoms indicative of overactive bladder (OAB). Enuresis was managed with Minirin, and OAB symptoms were treated with Oxybutynin. During follow-up, concurrent treatment for both LUTS and ADHD resulted in improvements in enuresis and OAB symptoms.
Conclusion:
The connection between ADHD and LUTS is not yet fully understood. However, continuous monitoring and concurrent treatment for both conditions appear to lead to better outcomes. Further studies with extended follow-up are needed to clarify this relationship and optimize treatment approaches.
