Purpose:: USP2 regulates cell growth or death and involves in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including malignant tumors. However, the function of USP2 in upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) has not been investigated. This study evaluates the clinical significance of USP2 expression in upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC).
Materials and methods: One-hundred and ten cases of UTUC were included in this study and USP2 expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry and the association of USP2 expression with clinicopathological variables was analyzed.
Results:  High USP2 expression was found in 48 (43.6%) of the cancer specimens. High USP2 expression in UTUC tissues was significantly associated with patients who had tumor stage (p = 0.001), tumor grade (p = 0.033), distant metastasis (p = 0.001) and tumor recurrence (p = 0.008 ). USP2 expression did not correlate with bladder recurrence-free (P = 0.661) or extra-bladder recurrence-free (P = 0.787) survival, but high USP2 expression was a significant predictor for cancer-specific survival (P = 0.014).
Conclusion:  Our findings indicated that higher USP2 expression is a potential biomarker to predict patient survival. Further study is necessary to investigate the role of USP2 in the carcinogenesis of upper urinary tract UC.
