Purpose: We aim to evaluate and analyze the prevalence of ejaculation dysfunction (EjD) in men with the ejaculatory domain of Male Sexual Health Questionnaire (MSHQ-EjD) in different age groups in southern Taiwan. Besides, we analyze the ejaculatory volume of different age groups in the NCKU hospital.
Materials and Methods: In this study, the ejaculatory domain of MSHQ (MSHQ-EjD) with a total of eight questions were used to evaluate ejaculatory function in male population in southern Taiwan. MSHQ-EjD has randomly been distributed to 500 men with age ranged between 20 to 80 years old. The 378 sealed envelopes were retrieved, and the overall questionnaire retrieval rate was 75.6%. Of the 378 questionnaires, 341 were effective. Moreover, we retrospectively analyze the ejaculatory volume in the semen sample in different age groups in the past two years in NCKUH. The difference of scores and ejaculatory volume among different age groups was analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Dunnett’s test. A P value less than 0.05 was considered as significant.
Results: The prevalence of EjD in South Taiwan was 18% with age less than 50 years old versus 50% with age more than 50 years old. After analyzing Q1 to Q8 of MSHQ-EjD, elderly men with EjD tend to report increased frequency of anejaculation, delay ejaculation, and painful ejaculation. On the contrary, elderly men with EjD tend to have decreased ejaculatory strength, ejaculatory volume, and orgasm pleasure. Interestingly, only a few men reported being bothered by the ejaculatory dysfunction. In our hospital, we retrospectively analyzed more than 500 semen samples and reported that the decreasing ejaculatory volume is related to age.
Conclusions: Ejaculatory dysfunction (EjD) is a common problem among men with age more than 50 years old. Our study addresses an overview of the prevalence and presentations of EjD in men age between 20 to 80 years old in the south of Taiwan with objective ejaculatory volume analysis which might be beneficial for exploring the complex pathophysiology of EjD in the future.
