Purpose: Quality of life (QoL) is an important issue in prostate cancer (PC) treatment for its chronic clinical course. Different treatment options are available in patient with the same disease stage. The Characters of global QoL after certain treatment may help physician and patients in decision making. We review global QoL in PC patients after standard initial treatments in our institution to explore the different between them.
Materials and Methods: Self-reported questionnaires, World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) were randomly obtained at urologic outpatient clinic in our institution among prostate cancer patients from January 2013 to April 2015 which was served as global QoL assessment with great validity and reliability. Some individuals received repeated measurements different times during follow-up. PSA-related parameters. The mix-effect model was used for analyzing the different treatment options on global QoL.
Results: There are 330 patients and 666 person-times completed the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaires which included localized disease (n=156), locally advanced (n=43) and metastatic disease (n=131). There is negative effect on physical domain of receiving radical prostatectomy t(β=-1.38, P<0.005) within 3 months and positive effect of receiving radiotherapy(β=1.11, P<0.005). No significant effect on physical or other domain among all therapy introduced more than three months. Confounding factors such as age, disease risk status, sociodemographic factors are adjusted. There are some limitations in this study, including single-institute and outpatient alone.
Conclusions: Our data showed both radical prostatectomy and radiotherapy short term impact on physical domain of global QoL which favored radiotherapy. No significant difference of global QoL in all treatment options received longer than 3 months. These results may help physicians and patients in decision making.
