Predicting prostate volume with blood pressure, is it possible?

Purpose: We observe a large portion of patient admitted for treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia has hypertension. As the incidence of these two diseases increase with aging, our aim is to find the correlation between the two, and to build up a model for predicting prostate volume with blood pressure.
Materials and Methods:A total of 2224 patient has received transrectal ultrasonography of the prostate in the advanced health examination center of our hospital. We collected general parameters of these patients including blood pressure as well as prostate volume. We analyzed the association in between and further tried to develop a formula to estimate prostate volume with only simple non-invasive measurements.
Results:Prostate volume has significant correlation with age (B=0.281, p<0.001), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (B=0.071, p<0.001) and PSA level (B=1.44, p<0.001). SBP remained as a significant contributing factor to prostate volume in multivariate linear regression model (p<0.001). We built a formula from randomly selected half of our population to predict prostate volume with age, SBP and PSA level: 0.248*Age + 1.246*PSA + 0.088*SBP. The formula was then tested for its accuracy on the other half of population (RMS 0.233, RMSE 0.319). The area under curve of ROC for the formula to predict prostate volume > 20ml is 0.663, and reaches 0.793 when predicting prostate volume >40ml.
Conclusions:Systolic blood pressure is strongly associated with prostate volume. It is able to predict prostate volume with merely non-invasive parameters, thus able to highly select patients for more invasive exam to reduce unnecessary complications.
