Purpose:
Bladder cancer is the fourteenth cause of mortality in Taiwan and urothelial carcinoma of urinary bladder, giant cell type is thought to be poor outcome. Here, we present 3 cases and literature review 2 studies, total 25 cases, to evaluate the prognosis of giant cell variant of urothelial carcinoma.
Materials and Methods:
Two studies with 8 patients and 13 patients and another one case report was searched from Pubmed in recent 10 years. Three patients had received treatment in our institute. We retrospectively reviewed these cases to evaluate the recurrence rate and mortality rate.
Results:
Total 25 cases with mean age 71 years old (32% female and 68% male). Half of the patients were diagnosed at least T2. Nine patients (36%) deceased in 12 months and 8 patients (32%) were found with tumor recurrence or distant metastasis in 3 years.
Conclusion:
Giant cell variant of urothelial carcinoma is a risk factor of poor prognosis, which has higher mortality than high grade UC.
