Therapeutic Effects of Low-INTENSITY Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy on Overactive Bladder

Purpose: The therapeutic benefits of low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave treatment (LiESWT) on hyperactive bladder were investigated in this clinical experiment (OAB).

Materials and Methods: The study included female patients between the ages of 20 and 75 clinically diagnosed with OAB. The LiESWT applicator was used with a 0.25 mJ/mm2, 3000 pulses, and 3 pulses/second intensity on the suprapubic skin region. At 4 weeks of LiESWT (W4), 8 weeks of LiESWT (W8), 1-month follow-up (F1), and 3-month follow-up (F3) after LiESWT, all subjects were required to complete the validated OAB symptoms and life bothersome questionnaires, 3-day urinary diary, uroflowmetry, and post-voided residual urine (PVR) measurement.

Results: A total of 82 people, with an average age of, were included in the study. Compared to baseline data, the questionnaire scores improved considerably at W4, W8, F1, and F3 (W0). The mean values of functional bladder capacity rose significantly by W8. The 3-day urinary diary revealed a considerable reduction in daytime frequency, urgency, and nocturia. The findings of the uroflowmetry revealed a significant increase in the mean voided urine volume and peak flow rate. The amount of PVR was also reduced considerably.

Conclusions: LiESWT improved OAB symptoms, uroflow metrics, and the quality of life in OAB patients, indicating that LiESWT might be used as an OAB non-invasive treatment.
