Purpose:

Since updated regulation for qualified urologists was required by the National Health Insurance Administration Ministry of Health and Welfare (NHI) in the end of 2023, this study was to perform a preliminary analysis of the qualified urological experts of da Vinci robot system in Taiwan.

Materials and Methods:

Qualified urological experts in the da Vinci robot system was announced by the Taiwanese Urological Association (TUA). The period of validation for qualification was six years. The members address book by TUA and websites of hospitals in Taiwan were collected for analysis. The scale of hospitals was based on the public data from New Hospital Accreditation in Taiwan 2024.

Results:

Up to March 15, 2024, 228 (the number 54 of the experts was missing) urological da Vinci experts passed the qualification process held by TUA. Two hundred and twenty-three (98%) males and five (2%) female urological experts were noted. There were 38 (17%) experts at the age or older than sixty. Among them, one expert was at the age of 79, and 18 (47%) were at the age or older than sixty-five. One hundred and twenty-one (53.1%) experts were in the northern part of Taiwan (including Hsinchu), Forty-four (19.3%) experts were in the middle of Taiwan (including Yunlin). Fifty-eight (25.4%) experts were in the southern part of Taiwan. Five (2.2%) experts were in the eastern part of Taiwan. Sixteen experts were noted in Taipei Veterans General Hospital, followed by Taichung Veterans General Hospital with 12 experts as number of experts counted by each single hospital. More than half of the experts were in the northern Taiwan,

Conclusion:

In this timely updating study, the qualified urological experts showed that age was not a limit factor for the high surgical technology of da Vinci robot system. Further research with longer follow-up is needed to clarify the characteristics.
