Chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma : a case report and review of literature

This is a 50-year-old male patient with past history of hypertension. The right tumor was noted during the health examination. The abdominal computed tomography was then arranged and revealed right renal tumor about 3cm over middle pole. Robot-assisted transperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy was performed on 2024-03-07. The patient was discharged uneventful six days after the operation. The pathology reported chromophobe renal cell carcinoma. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells are positive CD117 and negative CA9, vimentin and focal positive CK7. Currently, the patient is still following-up in our outpatient department.

Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (chRCC) is a rare type of kidney cancer that forms in the cells lining the small tubules in the kidney, which is the third most common renal cell carcinoma (RCC) subtype, accounting for 5%–7% of all RCCs. As the different types of kidney cancer are very distinct, characterizing and understanding each type is important. Two main morphological variants of chRCCs, the classic and eosinophilic, have been described. Patients with chRCC are younger, commonly female, present at an earlier stage, and less common to have sarcomatoid differentiation than those with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Radiologically, it is not possible to differentiate the RCC subtypes with certainty. The general approach for the treatment of localized chRCC is surgery, similar to that of ccRCC. Localized chRCC has better prognosis when compared to ccRCC. Herein, we present a case with chRCC from clinical presentation, image, management, pathology and follow-up condition.
