Abstract
We present a case of a 17-year-old male with no past medical history presented to our outpatient urologic clinic for 2 weeks of gross hematuria, frequency, and dysuria. Urine analysis showed hematuria and pyuria. The patient’s symptoms persisted despite a week of antibiotics treatment and further imaging was arranged. KUB revealed a radiopaque foreign body in the pelvic cavity. Bladder ultrasonography confirmed it as an intravesical lesion. Abdominal CT showed an unusual high radiopaque shadow within the bladder with marked metallic artifact. 74 calcified magnets beads, or known as the Buckyballs, were retrieved via the transurethral approach using cystoscopy-guided grasping forceps. Previously, multiple cases of ingestion of these educational toys, with some resulted in dreadful complications such as bowel perforation or fistula formation, have been reported. We report this case to warrant new safety concern with regard to these toys in Taiwan.
