Purpose: We investigate the potential benefit of utilizing 3-Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging during Transperineal MRI-ultrasound fusion prostate biopsy.

Materials and Methods: A total 64 male patients with suspicious prostate cancer who had received Transperineal MRI-ultrasound fusion prostate biopsy were enrolled. We analyzed the detection rate of prostate cancer using Chi-square test and independent sample t-tests. We also figure out the cutoff point of the main lesion length favorable for software-assisted fusion prostate biopsy with independent sample t-tests.

Results: There was significant difference in the detection rate of malignant cores between the patients receiving 3-TESLA MRI and 1.5-TESLA MRI. (p<0.05). However, no statistically significant difference of clinical prostate cancer detection rate was found between the previously mentioned two groups. Software-assisted fusion biopsy was a statistically preferable method compared to cognitive fusion biopsy for patients whose largest length of main lesion noticed on MRI was below 1.3cm.

Conclusions:

3-TESLA MRI was associated with better detection of suspicious prostate neoplasms noticed in exam, and correlated with a higher detection rate of malignant cores. 1.3 cm may be a suitable cutoff point favorable for software-assisted fusion prostate biopsy.
