Purpose: Owing to the advancement of artificial reproductive technique, sperm can be retrieval from a non-obstructive azoospermic(NOA) testis. But the success rate of sperm retrieval is dependent on the histology pattern. This study was conducted to investigate the potential factors which impact the spermatogenesis
Materials and Methods: From Jan. 2009, to Dec. 2015, we collected 43 NOA men who receive testicle biopsy and sperm retrieval including MESA and TESE. We retrospectively reviewed the histological finding. We analyzed the associated factors according to histology stratification. We explore the significant factors impact the spermatogenesis.
Results: Sperm retrieval rate was 85.7% in normal spermatogenesis, 53.8% in hypospermatogenesis, 50% in maturation arrest, 0% in sertoli-cell only. Sperm retrieval rates in the groups of men with FSH values <15, ≥15 mIU/mL was 56.3%, and 60% respectively. No sperm was retrieved in histology group with sertoli-cell only.
Conclusions: Sperm retrieval rate was statistical significantly related to FSH, LH, and histology types among the NOA men. But testicular size and testosterone did not contribute significantly. No sperm was retrieved in histology group with sertoli-cell only.
