Abstract:
Ureteral perforation associated with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a rare complication. The most common site of perforation is at the upper ureter. Problems associated with this
complication include retroperitoneal urinoma, urosepsis, abscess formation, infection, and renal function
impairment.
We present a rare case of a 55 year- old man with medical history of right nephrectomy; underwent left upper ureter ESWL, inducing upper ureteral rupture resulting in expanded peritoneal fluid
accommodation and pleural effusion.
Retrograde ureterscopy with Double J ureter catheter drainage and antibiotic treatment was done
successfully. The present case emphasizes the importance of adequate drainage; further indicate the importance of treatment strategy for renal function restoration.
