Biphosphonate therapy in the patient of bony metastatic prostate cancer-the experience of one institute

Purpose: Bisphosphonates were used as to prevent loss of bone mass, treat osteoporosis, and prevent some metastatic cancer induced skeletal-related events. In the patients of bony metastatic disease of multiple myeloma, breast cancer, and prostate cancer, the biphosphonate therapy is indicated for reduce the bone pain and fracture. We report the experiences in a single institute.
Materials and Methods: Retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the patient started from 2011 till present. The adverse events of the patient during the period such as skeletal fracture and osteonecrosis of the jaw were recorded. All the patients had been evaluated and treated by dentist in our hospital. There were two kinds of bisphosphonates available in our hospital.
Results: Totally 25 patients of prostate cancer fulfill the indication were included in the study periods. Seven patients died of disease. There was no skeletal fracture recorded in this period. There were 3 (12 %) patients developed the complication of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Thirteen patients started with zoledronic acid, and the other twelve patients started withdenosumab.
Conclusions: The biphosphonates therapy can prevent skeletal related event in bony metastatic patients of prostate cancer. About 12% developed ONJ in our series. The further detailed data will be reported and literature will be reviewed.
