A survey of the patients about erectile function after treatment for prostate cancer

Purpose:
Although evolving techniques of cancer treatment for prostate cancer is making good progress, the follow-up reports from the patients of their life quality are sparse. This is the preliminary study of patient report outcome research..
Materials and Methods:
During the educational meetings for prostate cancer survivors and families, anonymous based questionnaires were delivered and collected from the attendees. The items of questions included age, height, calculated body mass index (BMI), co-morbidity, time of cancer survivor, erectile functional score (erectile domain of international index of erectile function(IIEF), erection hardness score), types of radial treatment (robot assisted, pure laparoscopic or radiation) received and adjuvant hormonal therapy. Statistical analysis with SPSS® was performed. The initial study program was approved by institutional review board in 2016.
Results:
A total 67 cases were available for analysis. Initially, in the first educational program, 20 cases were collected. In expanding following other survivor’s meeting, 47 cases were collected. Up to the time before submission, Since it was a patient report outcome, no clinical or pathological staging was collected from this study. Mean Age was 57 years(ranging from 51 to 88). Mean BMI was 24.3(ranging from 17 to 34). There were 55% (37/67) of the patients received robotic assisted prostatectomy(16), or other prostatectomy(21). Fourteen percent and 22% of the patients considered sexual desire and sexual life important, respectively. More than 75 % of the patient had suffered from moderate to severe erectile dysfunction with IIEF score less than 11. BMI did not show significant correlation with IIEF in this study.
Conclusion:
Erectile dysfunction is still an issue of concern among the cancer survivors who received contemporary radical treatment for prostate cancer.
