Background
To test the association between the long-term effects of TCM and the risk of indwelling catheterization in dementia patients with dysuria.
Methods
We used the 1997–2013 National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan. The association between the use of TCM and catheter indwelling in dementia patients with dysuria was examined by multiple logistic regression analysis.
Results
A total of 11,069 patients with dementia were enrolled and 3982 participants who received medication for treat dysuria. There were 2121 in TCM users and 1861 in TCM non-users with a mean follow-up period of 7.25 years. Multivariate regression revealed that use of TCM decreased the risk of indwelling catheterization in dementia patients (adjusted hazards ratio (aHR) = 0.58, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) : 0.52–0.66) compared to TCM non-users.
Conclusion
TCM may have associated with a reduced risk of indwelling catheterization in dementia with dysuria. Further prospective studies are warranted.
