Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sedentary workload on hypogonadism and the association with erectile and lower urinary tract functions.
Materials and Methods: A total of 81 male first-line office managers of Taichung commercial bank were enrolled in this study. Serum testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol and PSA were checked in the morning. The International prostate symptoms scores (IPSS), 5-items version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaires and Saint Louis University ADAM (androgen deficiency in aging males) questionnaire were completed and data were obtained by all the enrolled subjective. Eighty one age-matched health check-up subjective were compared as controls.
Results: The age range of enrolled subjective was between 42 and 67 with an average of 48.9 ± 5.94 years. BMI of participants was larger than control group (24.9 ± 3.3 vs 23.8 ± 2.5, P<0.05). Moring Testosterone level was lower in study group (3.09± 0.89 vs 3.59± 0.72 ng/ml). There was no statistically significant difference in total IPSS scores between study and control groups (10.25± 4.79 vs 9.35± 3.72, p=0.186). However subgroup analysis disclosed study group had significantly higher storage domain of IPSS compared with control group (5.95± 2.21 vs 5.27± 1.63, p=0.029). But the difference was not obvious in voiding domain (4.28± 3.32 vs 4.075± 2.9, p=0.667). Those men with sedentary workload also had lower IIEF scores than control group (19.93 ± 4.08 vs 21.2± 2.76, p=0.0141)
Conclusion: Sedentary workload has negative effects on BMI, testosterone levels and erectile functions. Lower urinary tract symptoms, especially storage symptoms, were related to such work style.
