Purpose: Urinary retention is one of the disturbing conditions which patients encounter the most after a surgery. Considering as an effective, selective alpha-adrenergic receptor blocker, tamsulosin has become a worldwide medication for benign prostate hyperplasia and voiding symptoms improvement. We are going to evaluate the efficacy of tamsulosin as a prophylactic drug in preventing postoperative urinary retention in this article.
Materials and Methods: A systemic review and meta-analysis was undertaken to assess the influence of preoperative tamsulosin on the risk of postoperative urinary retention by searching studies from Medline, Pubmed, Embase databases.
Results: Eight randomized controlled studies with 1532 patients were included in our research. Preoperative tamsulosin significantly decreased the occurrence of postoperative urinary retention in the random effect model. ( Odds ratio 0.195; 95% CI: 0.122 to 0.31)Subgroup analysis showed the preventive effect was larger in spinal anesthesia than general anesthesia.
Conclusion: Our result shows the effect of preoperative tamsulosin in avoiding postoperative urinary retention in comparison to the placebo. Owing to the large heterogeneity observed in this meta-analysis, more studies with better methodological quality are needed.
