Purpose:
Prostate cancer (PCa) is a common malignancy of the male genitourinary system that occurs worldwide. Transrectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsy (TRUS prostate biopsy) is often used to help diagnose PCa. Some patients with high PSA or prostate focal nodules had negative TRUS prostate biopsy. Some patients had enlarged prostate with severe lower urinary tract syndromes (LUTS), such as acute urinary retention. All these patients will accept TRUS prostate biopsy before the transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for PCa survey. The aim of this study was to report the diagnostic value of PCa between TRUS prostate biopsy and TURP.
Materials and Methods:
This was a retrospective study. Data were collected from Chi Mei Hospital database during January 2014 to December 2020. One hundred and thirty four men suffering from prostate enlargement had severe LUTS or high PSA with negative TRUS prostate biopsy. They underwent both TRUS prostate biopsy and TURP that provided prostate specimens were evaluated.
Results:
The results showed 27 patients (20%) was diagnosed PCa. Three patients (2.2%) were diagnosed by TRUS prostate biopsy and fifteen patients (11.2%) were diagnosed by TURP. Other nine patients (6.7%) were diagnosed by both TRUS biopsy and TURP.
Conclusions:
According to the results of this study, the TURP can provide a higher total detection rate of PCa when compared with TRUS prostate biopsy. Still three patients (2.2%) need TRUS prostate biopsy for diagnosis of PCa. The value of TRUS prostate biopsy could not be totally ignored for PCa survey.
