Early outcomes following high intensity focused ultrasound for patients with localized prostate cancer: a single institute 5-year experience

Purpose: To evaluate the oncology outcomes and adverse events of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for patients with localized prostate cancer.

Materials and Methods: Between Nov 2018 and Aug 2022, 13 patients with localized prostate cancer (cT1 to T2cN0M0) were enrolled in this study. All patients received multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) and was confirmed prostate cancer through target biopsy. Patients were treated with HIFU (using ablatherm device). All patients received transurethral resection of prostate before HIFU. Lesions in prostate was ablated with HIFU. The biochemical recurrence rate and treatment related adverse events were assessed. The definition of biochemical failure was defined according to Phoenix criteria with a prostate specific antigen (PSA) rise of 2 ng/mL or more above the PSA nadir.

Results: Thirteen patients were enrolled in this study. Mean age was 70.69 years. The mean initial PSA was 7.78 ng/dL. The mean time to PSA nadir was 6.46 months and the mean PSA nadir was 0.39 ng/dL. No patient was found biochemical recurrence. Adverse events were minor (grade 2 or less) except on patient need surgical treatment for bladder neck contracture. All patients tolerated the whole treatment.

Conclusions: HIFU is an effective option for patients with localized prostate cancer. It shows acceptable result in short term cancer control with low rate of complication.
