The diagnosis and treatment of testicular tumors: a 10-year experience at Changhua Christian Hospital

Purpose:
Testicular cancer has become one of the most curable of solid neoplasms because of remarkable treatment advances beginning in the late 1970s. We reviewed the clinical and histological features of testicular tumors, the long-term experience of a single institution. We want to share our limited experience of the diagnosis and treatment of testicular tumors.
Materials and Methods:
We retrospectively reviewed a total of 70 men, who were treated with orchiectomy for testicular tumors at Changhua Christian Hospital Medical Center from 2006 to 2016.We analyzed their chief complaints, histopathological findings, age at operation, adjuvant therapy, and outcomes.
Results:
There were 70 men, aged from 0 to 71 years old. The median age at operation was 26 years. Pathology revealed 25 seminomas (35%) and 45 non-seminomas (65%), including 27 mixed germ cell tumors (38%), 5 yolk sac tumors (7%), 5 teratomas (7%), 2 embryonal carcinoma, 1 capillary hemangioma, 1 cellular angiofibroma, 1 dermoid cyst, 1 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, 1 NK/T cell lymphoma and 1 renal cell carcinoma. 31 occurred on left side while 39 on right side. Enlarged scrotum mass was the most common chief compliant (56, 80%), followed by pain and others. 23 patients received adjuvant chemotherapy and 2 received radiotherapy. The median follow up period was 19 months, range from 1 to 120 months.
Conclusion:
The most common testicular tumor in this study was mixed germ cell tumor, followed by seminoma. Early diagnosis and treatment may affect disease outcomes.
