Paraganglioma is a very rare tumor, arises from chromaffin tissue of the sympathetic nervous system, about it is reported that 10% paragangliomas might occur in extra-adrenal sites. Herein we report a 72-year-old male with incidentally finding of urinary bladder paraganglioma.
This 72-year-old man went to our outpatient clinic for the treatment of hypertension and abdominal fullness. Abdominal computed tomography was performed and one 11mm right bladder wall lesion with heterogenous appearance was noted. Cystoscopy was done and one small lesion protruding from anterior wall of urinary bladder with smooth surface and engorged vessel was noted. Transurethral resection of bladder tumor was performed and stable blood pressure was noted throughtout the whole surgery. Convalescence was uneventful and he was discharged at 2nd day after the operation. The pathology showed paraganglioma of urinary bladder.
Paraganglioma of urinary bladder is a very uncommon tumor, accounting for less than 1% of all bladder tumors. The common symptoms include fluctuated blood pressure while voiding along with frequency and urgency. The mainstay of management is complete surgical excision. Although it is rare, we suggested that transurethral resection of bladder tumor might be considered in selected patients with asymptomatic paraganglioma of urinary bladder.
