Purpose: Varicocele is a leading cause of male infertility and microscopic varicocelectomy is the primary surgical intervention for this condition. This study aimed to evaluate improvements in semen quality, recurrence rates and complication rates following microsurgical varicocelectomy.
Materials and methods: This retrospective study was conducted between September 2020 and December 2022 at China Medical University Hospital in Taichung, Taiwan. Patient characteristics, including age, body mass index, semen analysis, testicular volume, and number of veins ligated, were collected. Semen quality improvement, recurrence rates, and postoperative complication rates were also recorded after microsurgical varicocelectomy.
Results: Thirty-eight patients with clinical varicocele underwent subinguinal microsurgical varicocelectomy. After surgery, there was a significant improvement in sperm progressive motility rate, sperm immotile rate, and morphology (P < 0.05). Among patients followed up for 1 year, there was no recurrence of varicocele or formation of hydrocele.
Conclusions: Subinguinal microsurgical varicocelectomy was associated with increased rates of semen quality improvement, as well as decreased rates of complications.
